U.S.A. Consumers Confidence Rose In November 2009 ! Will The Market Make Big Gains Today ?

-- Confidence among U.S. consumers unexpectedly rose in November as a brightening outlook masked growing concern over joblessness.
The Conference Board’s confidence index increased to 49.5 from 48.7 the prior month. The New York-based Conference Board’s index, which focuses on the labor market and purchase plans, averaged 58 in 2008 and 103.4 in 2007.[More...]

Bernanke Frets About The Dollar

I wrote yesterday I thought markets had focused on the positive on Friday and that appears to have been even more the case overnight. To be fair, yesterday’s 1.2% QoQ rise in Japanese GDP in Q3 was a positive surprise (although this still leaves output down 4.5% YoY). But I wasn’t overly impressed with the stronger than expected 1.4% MoM gain in US retail sales in October, coming as it did after a revised 2.3% MoM decline in September (previously reported as a 1.5% mom decline).[More...]

The Rationale For The Market Rally

The rationale for the market rally since March 09 has been liquidity pumped by the Fed. The interesting point is that the market decline from summer 2008 to March 2009 has been also explained by the disappearance of liquidity. The disappearance of liquidity was caused by over levered banks.[More...]

PHILADELPHIA - Comcast Corp. announced Thursday it plans to buy a majority stake in NBC Universal for $13.75 billion, giving the nation's largest cable TV operator control of the Peacock network, an array of cable channels and a major movie studio.

Although the deal could mean that movies could reach cable more quickly after showing in theaters, and that TV shows could appear faster on cell phones and other devices, it was already raising concerns that Comcast would wield too much power over entertainment.

In agreeing to buy 51 percent of NBC Universal from General Electric Co., which has controlled NBC since 1986, Comcast hopes to succeed in marrying distribution and content in a way Time Warner Inc. could not.

WASHINGTON - Comcast Corp. will likely have to accept substantial conditions if the cable TV provider wants to win regulatory approval for control of NBC Universal's broadcast network, cable channels and movie studios.

Although federal regulators probably won't block a deal outright on anticompetitive grounds, they could prohibit Comcast, for instance, from denying rival subscription-TV services such as DirecTV access to NBC channels and other popular programming.

Under a deal announced Thursday, Comcast would control the Peacock network and about two dozen cable channels such as Bravo, CNBC and SyFy along with the cable lines to roughly a quarter of all U.S. households that pay for TV.
