Cramer Salutes Textron’s Embattled CEO

On Wednesday night’s Mad Money, Jim Cramer paid a compliment to the much maligned CEO of Textron (TXT) by pulling his picture off of the Wall of Shame. Cramer has been outspoken in his criticisms of Lewis Campbell over the past few months as Textron fell deeply out of favor with the market. Cramer mentioned the fact that no other CEO spent more money on business travel than did Campbell. However, it appears that the travel has paid off as Textron returned to profitability ahead of schedule with its most recent quarterly report.[More...]

Spreads are mixed in the major indices today as single-names lagged any underperformance intraday and credit notably underperformed equities all day. Aside from very early trading tights in IG12/13, the on-the-runs were unable to break yesterday's tights (while SPY managed to gap up and hold well off yesterday's highs). Spreads were tighter in the US as all the indices improved (though were unable to break Friday's tights and closed wider than Thursday's close). IG trades only 8.1bps tight (rich) to its 50d moving average, which is a Z-Score of -0.7s.d. At 105bps, IG has closed tighter on only 8 days so far this year (192 trading days). The last five days have seen IG converging to its 50d moving average.[More...]

Goldman Sachs is upgrading Textron (NYSE:TXT) to Conviction Buy from Neutral and raising price target to $23 (prev. $16) All of TXT’s cyclical businesses (Cessna, Industrial, TFC) are at or near trough and likely turning the corner, valuation is compelling, and catalysts lie ahead. The three key drivers of the upgrade are: 1) business jet data likely keeps improving in 2H09/2010, 2) Industrial could surprise to the upside near-term given that 60% of revenue is from Autos, and 3) continued credit and capital market improvement means more run-off success, potential asset sales, and liquidity enhancements.[More...]

Credit underperformed equities this week as single-name tighteners edged wideners by four-to-three leaving indices (especially HY) underperforming intrinsics in general. CONSumer and ENRG names underperformed as TMT and FINLs were best with INDUstrials mixed. Financials outperformed non-financials but the strength in the former was more at the tails of the distribution while the weakness in the latter was more broad-based.[More...]

Cessna's Profit Drops 87 Percent in Third Quarter

Oct. 27--Cessna's third-quarter profit was down 87 percent and revenue dropped 42 percent from the same period in 2008, its parent company reported today.
Textron reported that Cessna had a profit of $32 million in the quarter, a drop from $238 million a year ago.
It recorded $825 million in revenue, down from $1.4 billion.
