I've always been a fan of what are now called "alternative investments" and never really cared as much for "generic index style equities", although I have owned them of course. Property, commodities, gold and higher yield instruments were always more interesting to me once I began to understand how imbedded inflation really was in the modern world. Now that I am retired and living on my money, my "business" is to generate income as a goal more important than capital gains. Increasingly I am working on the great divide between tax-deferred and taxable accounts in the US, now and for the future. Perhaps we should call them "totally taxable" and "partly taxable" accounts since every penny one takes out of the IRA or 401K is taxable while only gains and dividends and interest are taxable from the taxable accounts. Re-balancing For 2009

My first of the year rebalancing/repositioning is done. I haven't really made a lot of changes, but have consolidated and/or eliminated some smallish positions to keep it simpler. Bear in mind that my main goal these days is relative safety and fairly steady income with inflation protection for the future. I have both tax-deferred accounts and taxable accounts In tax-deferred accounts my goal is to generate income within them sufficient to fund IRS "Required Minimum Distributions" (RMD) which are based upon life expectancy. The IRS guarantees (to themselves) that everything in them **will be taxed**. Since taxes are quite likely to rise, I have little desire to increase the total value per se of such funds at this stage. All gains are taxed the same as income, and the IRS is a full partner. About six weeks ago in one my blog posts on income investing I wrote: http://twocents.blogs.com/weblog/2008/06/recognition-wave.html "Unless we have a deflationary collapse starting soon, bonds have nowhere to go but down. There is still a small group who believe that the deflation of 1996-98/99 will recommence after this inflationary interlude of 8-10 years. I myself have felt that a timeout or rest period in inflation was due, especially if a deeper recession occurred. In that case one would expect a decent bond rally. However, barring amazing collapses of multiple financial institutions and a permanent contraction of credit in its wake this year, there will be no long term bond rally until rates are much, much higher in a decade or more." What a roller coaster ride this morning. The MLP index is down a little less than 3 points. Terra Nitrogen is down 13 at 96 and change and traded as low as 92 but that is a high priced MLP. Tortoise Energy (TYG) is down 2.50. E V Partners is down nearly 2. Oneok LP (OKS) Natural Resource (NRP), Penn Virginia Resources (PVR) Energy Transfer (ETP) all down 1.Global Partners (GLP) and Amerigas (APU) and Holly Partners (HEP) are up 1 or more among the few winners. All over the place today and its hard to figure just exactly what is going on. The energy complex has turned higher including natural gas believe it or not. Then there is the stock market volitility which had em up then down then up then down and now up again. 10 year rates are falling.
