Highlights include JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and General Motors Corporation (GM). Worries about the financial sector caused the S&P 500 (SPX) to trade below 800 for the first time since November. As I write this, JP Morgan (JPM) is down by more than 8%. The auto sector isn't helping, either. Shares of General Motors (<a[More...]

Rather, they are merely guideposts to measure the quality of deviance in a way that allows the US's local, state and federal judiciary to hand out retribution. If you need further proof of this, I offer you two words – Bernard Madoff. In an under-regulated world, Ponzi schemes might not be illegal. In fact, you can assume that is a near certainty, judging by the number of famous[More...]

Will Gov. Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber "hook up?" Will Cindy stop paying John's massive gambling debts and find true love with her rocker boyfriend? These are some of the day's burning questions – you can't believe how many people think Sarah and Joe (the Plumboner... Pluvernor) is a terrific match. Sadly, if you shook me like a Lucky 8-Ball, John/Cin and Joe/Sar may be the only two questions for which I lack a big-picture answer. Normally, I would eschew even the slightest thought of such light-as-air musings, but I'm caught a bit short this week. You see, each week, here at IDE, the writers and editors agree upon a collective theme –one that will highlight our individual perceptive masses in a manner that is engaging for you – expresses the responsibility we accept for the writer's relationship with our[More...]

Vote on Auto Bailout Sure to Spark Debate

The legislative powers in Washington D.C. believe that they have reached an agreement in principle to a sweeping bailout of the auto industry. Word is that the vote passed in Congress already Wednesday morning with little trouble. The newest iteration of the plan has the government loaning the auto makers $15 billion initially, giving General Motors (GM) and Chrysler time to stave off bankruptcy while a long term restructuring and loan package is determined. <img style="margin: 10px" height="169" alt="Taxpayers-are-pushing-the-automaker-down-the-road"[More...]

Today GM presented its case for a taxpayer funded bailout (see GM Asks for $18 Billion). While GM’s plan of action comes close to addressing the concerns that plague GM, I am not certain that it goes far enough. Last week I detailed what I thought it would take to right GM (see Pre-packaged Bankruptcy Unlikely). I wrote: I have been adamant that whatever aid the taxpayer provides comes with properly structured terms, with properly structured incentives, and at a hefty price to current shareholders, creditors, and management. In particular, in the case of GM, conditions for the receipt of aid could[More...]

UAW Contracts Put Detroit On Road to Ruin, And A $50B Bailout Would Only Be The Down Payment

A bailout might avoid any near-term bankruptcy filing, but it won't address Detroit's fundamental problems of making cars that Americans won't buy and labor contracts that are too rich and inflexible to make them competitive (see chart above of the $25 pay gap between the Big 3 and Toyota/Honda, and note that the average UAW worker compensation is $146,400 per year). Detroit's costs are far too high for their market share. While GM has spent billions of dollars on labor buyouts in recent years, it is still forced by federal mileage standards to[More...]

The stock market closed up 99.50 points on the day as General Motors and the United Auto Workers reached a tentative deal to end a two-day strike. The market also rallied on news that Bear Stearns may sell a minority stake to investors including Warren Buffett. In addition, Chevron announced a $15 billion share buyback. Reality came the day before as Lowe’s (LOW) guided 2007 earnings lower and Target Corp. (TGT) cut its Sept. sales forecast. In addition, durable goods orders came in lower than expected. Here's the real scoop. While GM and the United Auto Workers ended their strike, over 3 million manufacturing jobs have been lost in the US since 2000. This slow economic death continues to unfold before our very eyes, while most soccer moms and 12 hour working fathers remain oblivious to the facts. Massaged economic reports continue to proclaim that the unemployment rate remains steady, but they fail to mention that Americans who are unable to find jobs are labeled disgrunt[More...]
