Dec. 5--Robert W. Baird & Co., a Milwaukee-based financial services firm, has hired a Charlotte brokerage veteran to open a new wealth management office here.
Henderson said he expects to bring on as many as 15 financial advisers in the next six to nine months as the firm expands its wealth management presence in the Carolinas.
The move adds to Baird's growth in North Carolina.

Nov. 29--Reckitt Benckiser, maker of household and healthcare products such as Dettol and Nurofen, plans to raise £2 billion in the bond markets, sparking renewed speculation about a major acquisition.
Large shareholders in the company, which has only £400 million of debt, told Financial Mail that Reckitt wanted to take advantage of buoyant bond markets and could raise the capital before Christmas.
Last week, SSL posted strong results for the six months to September, with profits rising 60 per cent to £51.9 million, due mainly to expansion into Russia.

Nov. 25--Federal regulators announced Tuesday that they have charged a Minneapolis money manager and a Burnsville radio personality with running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded at least 1,000 people out of more than $190 million in a bogus currency investment scheme.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued statements about separate lawsuits the agencies filed Monday in Minneapolis that were made public Tuesday.
The agencies said they had obtained emergency orders freezing the assets held by "self-proclaimed" money manager Trevor Cook, 37, of Apple Valley, and conservative radio talk show host Patrick Kiley, 71, of Burnsville, as well as four of their business entities and 13 "relief defendants" related to the alleged scheme, including two of Cook's in-laws.

Top price on Lloyds shares in record UK rights issue

Nov. 24--Lloyds Banking Group today fired the starting gun on its record-breaking rights issue pricing the new shares at the top end of the range it set itself three weeks ago.
The £13.5 billion issue of new shares is the biggest ever by a UK company and will enable Lloyds to extricate itself from the Goverment's asset protection scheme (GAPS) which was designed to insure the bank against losses on its worst debts but proved very expensive.
The Treasury is backing the rights issue at a cost of £5.8 billion which is the equivalent of £232 for every one of the 25 million households in the United Kingdom.

Nov. 22--As retailers and shoppers prepare for the traditional kickoff of the holiday shopping season, the question this year is not whether sales will be weak, but how weak they'll be.
Despite some faint indications recently that the nation's economy may have stopped shrinking, retail experts and economists agree that this year's crucial Christmas retailing season is likely to see a sales decline from last year.
The good news is that the decline is likely to be much less severe than last year's sharp drop -- 5.5 percent in November and 8 percent in December through Christmas Eve.

Economy grew 4.8% in latest quarter: But future hazy as stimulus steps dry up

Nov. 17--The economy grew an annualized 4.8 percent in the July-September period, marking the second straight quarter of growth amid stronger consumption and exports, the government said Monday.
It was the best performance since 5.7 percent growth was logged in January-March 2007.
Exports surged 6.4 percent, the same pace as during the April-June quarter.

The Securities Law Firm of Klayman & Toskes , www.nasd-law.com, announced today that it filed an arbitration claim against UBS on behalf of a two retirees, for losses sustained as a result of the brokerage firm's unsuitable investment recommendations. The suit was filed with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's Department of Arbitration. Specifically, the Claimants, at the direction of their UBS advisor, invested a substantial amount of money in structured warrants, which were represented to be safe, low risk investments. When recommending these products, the advisor stated that the warrants were ideal for the Claimants and were designed for 'security' and 'designed for a downturn.' In his words, there were 'no surprises' related to these products. However, structured warrants carry significant risks and are not suitable for all investors. Unfortunately, the Claimants were never told that these warrants were speculative investments that were highly illiquid and risky.
