About 75% of Americans own at least one car. One in four owe more on their car than it’s worth. These numbers are frightening, and they’re the reason many Americans are desperately trying to sell their vehicles. With the number of car owners finally dropping for the first time in decades, a new industry is starting to take off. Zipcar is an hourly car rental, or car sharing, company located in many major U.S. cities. The company has been around for about 10 years, but as a recent New York Times article points out, “(it) almost seems to have been founded with 2009 in mind.” A favorite among college students, Zipcar lets its 250,000 members take a car for a few hours at a time to go grocery shopping, visit friends, or just go for a drive in the country. UHAL Carries Thru Bear Market - Analyst Blog

AMERCO Inc. (UHAL) is the parent company of U-HAUL International, the largest consumer truck rental company in the world. It is also the second largest self-storage company in North America. Second quarter results were in line with our forecasts. Moving and storage revenue are still under some pricing pressure, which is expected to continue. The stock has usually been valued on EBITDAL (EBITDA plus lease expense) per share, selling between two and three times EBITDAL. Based on our new estimates for the next four quarters EBITDAL of $28.16 a share we would expect a price range of $56 to $84. Since we are in a bear market we would expect a valuation in the lower end of the range. Our price forecast is $60 and we are maintaining our rating as a BUY. [More...]

AMERCO Inc. (UHAL) is the parent company of U-HAUL International, the largest consumer truck rental company in the world. It is also the second-largest self-storage company in North America. The problems of the auto industry have impacted AMERCO's revenue and earnings. Self-Moving revenue was slightly below our estimate ($390A vs. $400E) as was pretax income ($48 vs. $50). We expect some of the problems to continue and have adjusted our numbers. We rate the stock a Buy and reduced our price target to $60 a share. As suggested in our 4Q08 report, discounting was less in the June quarter. This reduction may also have been due to the Budget rental trucks cutting back on discounting due to its impact on revenue.
