Unilever Buys Sara Lee Arm For $1.9 Billion As Part Of Emerging Market Expansion

Anglo-Dutch Unilever PLC/AG (NYSE ADR: UL, UN) on Friday made an aggressive play to expand its brand portfolio by purchasing the personal care arm of U.S.-based Sara Lee Corp. (NYSE: SLE). Unilever will pay $1.87 billion (1.28 billion euros) in cash for the business, which includes brands like Sanex and Radox. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the company’s position in skin care and deodorants in Western Europe, and build the brands in emerging markets.[More...]

Nov. 6--Nine months into the job and the boss of Unilever has posted a second consecutive quarter of growth and made significant inroads in turning the consumer goods giant around.
Chief executive Paul Polman said a combination of spending more on marketing and cutting some prices, helped the firm beat volume growth forecasts.
The firm, which also owns Marmite, has embarked on a stream of advertising and launched a new range of Lipton teas and Surf washing power in Britain.

Aug. 31--BEC World Plc (BEC), the operator of TV Channel 3, projects its second-half revenue will improve over the first six months as advertising spending increases as the economy improves.
The pullout of ads by Unilever (Thai) Holding from Channel 7 earlier this year has also created opportunities, as rival firms increase ad spending in the mass-market channel to grab market share in the consumer-products market.
Unilever withdrew from Channel 7 in protest against higher air-time rates.
