Daily Credit Summary: October 28 - Banks, Builders And Bailouts

Spreads were broadly wider in the US as all the indices deteriorated (moving to their widest levels since 10/02). Curves were modestly flatter but roll trades saw significant decompression (both in HY and IG) especially between series 9 and 12/13. At 109bps, IG is within 1bps of its widest close since 09/04 (as we note intraday wides of almost 115bps as a significant eye-ball level for many to watch).[More...]

UPS Earnings Plunge And They Don’t See Much Recovery Yet

There are a couple of companies in this country that possess as much real time economic intelligence as any government agency. One I Walmart and the others are UPS and FedEx. You can save yourself a lot of time researching economic trends if you just listen to what they say and what kind of numbers they post. In that regard, UPS didn’t exactly deliver the best news today. For the quarter UPS reported a profit of $445 million on revenues of $10.83 billion. That compares to a profit of $873 million on revenues of $13 billion for the same period last year. Yikes, those are ugly numbers but they’re backward[More...]
