Oil Vs. Natural Gas

The first headline that crossed my desk yesterday was a recent prediction made by Warren Buffett.
It wasn't the prediction itself that made me skeptical, but rather the steps needed to make it come true.
While speaking at Rice University, one student asked Buffett for his thoughts on peak oil — a subject with which my readers are very familiar. Specifically, the question was what would replace carbon fuel. He predicted that all cars would be electric within the next 20 years.[More...]

On The Ground In Brazil

If seeing is believing, natural resources and infrastructure opportunities abound in Brazil. The above photo was snapped by our global strategist Jack Dzierwa at São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport as he spent hours trying to board a domestic flight to Rio de Janeiro. Not surprisingly, he didn’t make the flight. Jack has traveled extensively around the world, and he says he’s never seen anything like the hectic scene at Guarulhos, which just can’t service the rapidly growing number of Brazilians who can now afford to travel by air.[More...]

Why Are Natural Gas Producers Expanding Production So Aggressively?

While the price of natural gas is in the dumps US producers continue to expand production. Why? Oh I think it's pretty obvious. And it's nothing to do with the magical V shape recovery in the U.S. As I often say as people mix natural gas and crude together as if its the same thing (hey "it's energy") - unlike crude which can benefit from economic growth in Asia, natural gas is largely a domestic commodity despite efforts to make it more transportable. (Mar 24, 2009: Will Liquified Natural Gas Turn this Commodity Global?) In fact the divergence between the price of oil and natural gas tells you all you need to know about the reflective economies of the globe versus US. (again using ETFs that have a LOT of issues.
Assuming that GDP growth is slightly negative for the next 3 to 4 quarters while the credit markets gradually strengthen, let's consider the outlook and opportunities for the Alternative Energy industry over the next 6 to 12 months. Many companies engaged in the solar power market offer profitability with strong average long-term annual earnings growth expectations of approximately 40%, stock price valuations significantly discounted from their recent historic highs, and a favorable political environment. Industry Outlook for Alternative Energy Stocks: Speculative - Bullish The electric power industry is one of the world's largest industrial segments. With a global market share of approximately 25%, the United States is the leading producer of electricity, followed by China, Japan and Russia. Total global electricity consumption volume grew at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.1% from 1980 to 2006,[More...]
