Telecom Industry

Dismal economic events have culminated in drastic declines of market valuation among companies in nearly every industry/sector, including impacts to telecom industry performance.? Capital spending constraints among carriers, and limited funds available to sustain (grow) telecom services over the next six- to twelve-months, may be outcomes of credit markets remaining restricted and overall GDP growth remaining tepid or even retracting. Telecom carriers often resort to credit markets for funding capital projects, while telecom equipment companies conventionally use equity share offerings in lieu of debt instruments. The outcome has been a disappointment, regardless of the selected financing mechanism. As a result of weakening macroeconomic indicators, telecom carriers' capital expenditures remain limited in 2008 and early 2009.? There has been more selectivity on technology choices and leveraging cost-savings synergies, such as streamlining purchasing[More...]

TDS Priced Near Fair Value - Analyst Blog

We maintain our Hold recommendation for Telephone & Data Systems Inc. (TDS), following the release of recent quarterly results. Although the management has reduced its 2008 outlook for revenue and subscriber additions, it continues with share repurchase initiatives. TDS is focusing on improving profitability through network technology upgrades, strengthening its brand image and expansion of network coverage through acquisitions. Although recent quarterly results were above of our expectations, we are not yet convinced that the company can sustain the earnings momentum in future reporting periods, principally due to higher expenses for wireless infrastructure upgrades and promotional campaigns. TDS is trading at 9.1x estimated earnings for 2008, which is at a discount to both the S&P 500 and the industry group[More...]

Shorting Telecom

After steady selling through most of the day today, a broader selection of charts look good for short sales. Running through sectors, I was struck by the number of setups in the telecommunications and wireless sectors. In each case we have a rally off of the low that failed at significant resistance. The consistency of the pattern suggests that sector stocks will have trouble moving higher from this level. - MBT moved lower today on high volume, and has resistance in the 50.00 area. <img alt="" src="http://www.istockanalyst.com/images/articles/2008-11-05-mbt6mo.png2008117667small.jpg"[More...]

As we head into the heart of second quarter [Q2] earnings season, we asked a few questions of senior telecom analyst David Weissman, CFA about what kinds of results he is expecting, whether MA will continue to play a big role and what his forecast is for the remainder of 2007. What are you expecting in terms of Q2 earnings? We are expecting improved earnings from most of the telecom carriers and equipment manufacturers for the first half of 2007, and that includes the upcoming quarterly forecast. We continue to see revenue and earnings strength in the mobile/cellular carrier segment, along with equipment manufacturers providing infrastructure that enable related voice and data for wireless services. It should come as no surprise that the overall stock performance in this sector has been correlated to cellular subscriber growth, especially overseas. We have witnessed the strongest returns among wireless carrier[More...]

Feb. 15--GULFPORT -- The Harrison County Adult Detention Center has reverted to old computer technology for inmate records because of frustration over a $19 million project the sheriff said has failed to deliver the services promised.

The Sheriff's Department, a key advocate of the Mississippi Automated System Project under the prior sheriff's administration, has given up on the federally funded venture.

The jail's return to DOS-based technology -- a disk-operated system -- means inmate booking information is entered into a mainframe computer system that uses programming language developed in the 1950s and '60s and a program written for the jail in the 1980s.
