Brazil Gets A Little Nutty

Brazil made news late Monday by imposing a capital inflow tax of 2% in an effort to try to put the breaks on the rapid ascent of the real, the currency. In reaction to the news the Bovespa dropped 2.88%, the iShares Brazil ETF(EWZ) was down 3.82% and the currency, as measured by the WisdomTree Brazilian Real ETF (BZF) dropped 2.12%. YTD those three are up 65%, 120% and 35% respectively. My core holding for Brazil has been Vale (VALE) for several years and a couple of name changes and it is up about the same as EWZ.[More...]

If you are nervous about inflation, you want to buy gold, right?
As the economy has perked up, nickel prices have risen from below $5 a pound in April to above $7 now.
The price of the base mineral, used in producing stainless steel, has been helped by the hoarding of Chinese producers who figure they won't see such low prices again for a while, analyst Bart Melek of BMO Capital Markets (BMO) says.

Vale Plans to Offer Two Series of Mandatorily Convertible Notes

Vale S.A. hereby announces that it plans to offer in the global capital markets two series of mandatorily convertible notes due 2012 through its wholly-owned subsidiary Vale Capital II. At their maturity and upon certain events earlier, the Series VALE-2012 Notes will be mandatorily converted to American Depositary Shares , each representing one common share of Vale, and the Series VALE.P-2012 Notes will be mandatorily converted to ADSs, each representing one preferred class A share of Vale. Together, the ADSs will represent up to an aggregate of 18,415,859 common shares and 47,284,800 preferred class A shares of Vale, all of which Vale currently holds in treasury.[More...]
