I have not done well in the markets for the last six weeks. Here is why: Overweight in Life Insurers. Yes, they are in better shape than the banks, but that only means they got hit later, not that they would not get hit. Too much economic sensitivity. As expected, the retail sales numbers released today were indeed horrible. What does that mean for the tech sector?First, how bad were the retail sales numbers? According to the Census Bureau retail sales report for September, estimated monthly sales for retail and food services on a seasonally adjusted basis fell 1.2% last month from the previous month. This is the biggest monthly percentage decline in more than three years. It is also represents a 1% drop from September 2007.According to the New York Times, MasterCard reported last week that spending on consumer electronics and home appliances dropped 13.8 percent in September compared with a year ago. We maintain a Hold rating on the shares of ValueClick, Inc. (VCLK), a Westlake Village, California-based online marketing services company. VCLK is currently trading at a P/E multiple of 13.5x our 2008 earnings per share estimate of $0.71, a discount to the industry median. Although over the long-term we are very positive on online advertising growth, current economic conditions are creating significant headwinds for ValueClick and others in the industry. Rising energy prices and falling housing prices have caused consumer confidence to drop, and consumer spending has fallen as a result. ValueClick shares drop on 4Q sales outlook

SAN FRANCISCO - ValueClick Inc.'s shares fell Wednesday after the online advertising company issued lower-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue guidance.
But ValueClick predicted $128 million to $138 million in fourth-quarter revenue, which is lower than the $142 million analysts polled by Thomson Reuters are expecting.
In a note to clients, Needham & Co. analyst Mark May downgraded ValueClick to "Hold" from "Buy," calling its guidance "disappointing."
