Trading On Dubai World Worries

Last week, in my "S&P 500 Advance/Decline" post (on November 21, 2009), I mentioned about very low Advance/Decline quotes readings on the S&P 500 which signaled oversold stock market sentiment. I have pointed to the higher odds of the up move at that time. The indexes (S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and DJI) indeed reacted on that oversold signals by the strong up-move on November 23, 2009. However, this gain was shadowed by the "Dubai World financial worries" that hit the market and pushed it strongly down on November 27, 2009.[More...]

Dubai Debt Concerns Trigger Spikes In Foreign Volatility Indices

With the S&P 500 and NASDAQ futures both down approximately 3% as I type this on concerns about the ability of Dubai World to repay some $59 billion in debt, tomorrow’s half day session is likely to be ugly and volatile. In a vacuum, this type of event would be concerning, but not likely to cause panic. With the emotional scars of the financial crisis still looming large in the memories of investors (i.e., Availability Bias and Disaster Imprinting), I would not be surprised to see an overreaction in the markets tomorrow.[More...]

Spreads were mixed to slightly tighter in the major indices today despite negative breadth in single-names. HY outperformed IG as both indices saw inside days amid low volumes pre-holiday tomorrow. Financials outperformed non-financials but the financials were off their best levels by the close (as we suspect some concerns over Bair's Basel II Bumblings started to be taken seriously).[More...]
