Daily Credit Summary: October 28 - Banks, Builders And Bailouts

Spreads were broadly wider in the US as all the indices deteriorated (moving to their widest levels since 10/02). Curves were modestly flatter but roll trades saw significant decompression (both in HY and IG) especially between series 9 and 12/13. At 109bps, IG is within 1bps of its widest close since 09/04 (as we note intraday wides of almost 115bps as a significant eye-ball level for many to watch).[More...]

Financially Healthy Stocks With Attractive Valuations

Value Expectations teaches professional investors how to make more informed investment decision evaluating stocks on the basis of corporate performance, valuation, management quality, earnings quality, and other proprietary variables. These variables inevitably help identify companies that are potential long-term investments while avoiding potential torpedoes. However, during the financial crisis, leverage and a week balance sheet played a significant part when investors evaluated a holding. To help our institutional clients navigate the environment The Applied Finance Group (AFG) developed the risk analysis template specifically to model the healthiness of a company’s balance sheet. In addition to the risk analysis template we also developed a template that calculated an Altman Z-Score developed to identify companies that are most likely to go bankrupt.
Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) is planning to sell three European refineries as part of its restructuring of downstream operations. Of these, the company’s sole UK refinery – Stanlow in Ellesmere, Cheshire – is the most important. The other two are German refineries in Hamburg and Heide. Shell is also looking to sell its Montreal East refinery in Canada, which has a capacity of 121,000 barrels per day. The Stanlow refinery has a capacity of 272,000 barrels a day (producing about a sixth of UK’s petrol output) and employs 1,000 people and 800 contractors. The two German refineries have an aggregate capacity of about 200,000 barrels per day and employ about 500 people each.

NEW YORK - The largest independent petroleum refiner in the U.S. said Tuesday it lost nearly $500 million in the third quarter as it was caught between a rise in oil prices and a slump in American travel.

The company, which is based in San Antonio, Texas, lost $254 million between April and June.

But Valero's problems also show how the weak U.S. currency has hurt companies that typically see only a modest shift in results related to exchange rates.

NEW YORK -- With oil up near $80 a barrel, drilling companies are ready to dust off idled rigs and kick-start a global production network that thrives on high energy prices.

They say oil prices are finally at a level that gets drillers excited.

As the oil industry begins reporting third-quarter earnings, the rebound in crude prices may lead to more jobs in the oil patch as companies spread out in search of more petroleum, especially shale gas deposits worldwide.
