Nov. 2--AUSTIN -- Proposals designed to create a network of top-flight universities, toughen protections for property owners and streamline the state's tax appraisal system are among 11 state constitutional amendments to be decided by voters in Tuesday's elections.
"This is an important election," said Randall Dillard, a spokesman for the Texas secretary of state's office, which monitors elections.
"We hope people will take it seriously and get out and vote."

About 250 people attended a public hearing Monday night at Cumberland Head Elementary School, where public comment was first opened to Cumberland Head residents.

May 25--ESSEX -- Plans for a new town wastewater treatment plant go to vote here June 5.
Essex is the only town on the shores of Lake Champlain without a sewage treatment facility, despite final engineering and site design done four years ago.
"We won a $5 million lottery, but there was no money with it," Town Supervisor Ron Jackson said.

Mar. 30--BEND STORE RECALLS TRAIL MIX OVER SALMONELLA FEARS: A store in Bend said today it is recalling a trail mix made with peanuts over fears that it might be contaminated with salmonella.
The Produce Patch said Cascade Trail Mix was made with peanuts from Peanut Corp. of America, which is facing a criminal investigation in an outbreak that has sickened at least 691 nationwide.

Mar. 12--Once upon a time, long ago, the ministers who controlled the Post Office decided that it should offer the people this new-fangled telephone thingy.
An analysis from Morgan Stanley essentially concludes that today's BT is a massive pension scheme which is feeding off a decidedly anaemic telecoms business.
The pension assets are £30 billion, while the market value of BT is little more than £6 billion.

Maybe if Jim Waldman had dubbed his proposed legislation the Sheriff Ken Jenne Prison Preemption Act, his fellow Democrats might not have stomped the idea as if it were an autographed photo of Rush Limbaugh.
Rep. Waldman, registered as a Democrat despite his descent into heresy, riled up party hacks with the notion of designating the Broward County sheriff a nonpartisan office.

Feb. 4--In the years of sectarian strife unleashed by the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Ali Mahmood had to flee death squads and rogue cops.
The 28-year-old led a nomadic existence, moving from his native Basra to Baghdad and the northern city of Mosul, and then back to Basra.
When it came time for Mahmood to vote in Iraq's provincial elections on Saturday, he was a no-show.

Jan. 28--In Najaf, the heart of Shiite Muslim Iraq, pedestrians linger on the sidewalks of a busy bazaar, men smoke fruit-flavored shisha tobacco in cafes and a new first-class hotel with sparkling marble floors and dripping chandeliers is almost full.
Beneath this veneer of calm, however, an uneasy power struggle among southern Iraq's Shiite majority has emerged.
The Shiite parties that are vying for several hundred seats in Saturday's provincial elections are the State of Law coalition, affiliated with Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki and his Dawa party, and its opponent, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.

Jan. 10--Amid new calls for heightened oversight, the Long Island Power Authority will issue an executive directive Monday mandating that the cost of all new energy and capacity contracts be publicly disclosed, LIPA chief Kevin Law said Friday.
The directive comes in response to revelations, reported in Newsday Friday, that LIPA inked more than $6 billion in new long-term energy and capacity contracts over the past half decade without disclosing a cent of the costs to ratepayers.
Still, revelations of the $6 billion in previously undisclosed contract costs have renewed calls for legislation to scrutinize LIPA books, contracts and rate increases after a decade of no oversight.

Nov. 4--BPI Industries is the company the county signed a lease with to mine the methane gas out of the coal deposits that lie under Shelby County.
The original deal signed in the fall of 2004 gave BPI the coal and gas rights to 63,249 acres in the southern part of the county for $2.1 million dollars.
BPI had asked the county to extend their lease at the October board meeting.
