Judge Extends Avondale Water Rate Injunction

Aug. 25--Customers of Avondale Water and Sewer have again been handed a short-term delay in the implementation of increased rates.
Added to the good news for customers is that an agreement seems close to take the system off Avondale's hands.
"This court is keenly aware of the socioeconomic conditions in Graniteville and Vaucluse both by judicial notice, personal observation and from the plaintiff's submissions to the court," Early wrote.

Graniteville Water Rates Reinstated

Aug. 13--The highest water rates in the CSRA have been reinstated by the Public Service Commission (PSC), meaning Graniteville and Vaucluse residents are liable for their increased water and sewer bills for at least the next few months.
Rep. Tom Young said the same of the former mill owners -- that while Avondale physically attended negotiations, representatives rejected any compromise offer and countered only with the demand that customers pay the full, current rate.
Young also expressed disappointment in the PSC for unanimously accepting the motion to reinstate the rates without any discussion.

Graniteville Water Rate Increases Are Suspended

Aug. 6--Graniteville and Vaucluse water rate increases have been immediately suspended by the South Carolina Public Service Commission (PSC) until further notice.
The PSC took action to combat the rate increases allowed to be implemented by Avondale Mills, admitting they did not realize the effect the price increase would have on residents of the impoverished former mill town.

Residents Irate: Water Bills Up 700 Percent

Aug. 4--Graniteville and Vaucluse residents are up in arms after receiving "outrageous" water bills totaling hundreds of dollars from water operator and former mill owner Avondale.
On Friday, the customers of the Avondale water and sewer entity opened their bills to find increases up to 700 percent from the previous month's bills.
After agreeing to the request of system owners Avondale Mills LLC in June, the South Carolina Public Service Commission (PSC) raised the water and sewer rates for the system for the first time since the 1980s.

Vermont Pure Holdings Q2 Net Income Down

Vermont Pure Holdings, which is engaged in the production and distribution of bottled water, has reported a net income of $232,000, or $0.01 per diluted share, for the second quarter ended April 30, 2009, compared to $471,000, or $0.02 per diluted share, for the same quarter of fiscal 2008.
For the second quarter of fiscal 2009, total sales decreased 4% to $16.8 million from $17.4 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2008.
Net income was $327,000, or $0.02 per diluted share, compared to $983,000, or $0.05 per diluted share, in the first six months of fiscal 2008.

Vermont Pure Q1 Net Income Down

Vermont Pure Holdings, which is engaged in the production and distribution of bottled water, has reported a net income of $95,000 for the first quarter ended January 31, 2009, compared to $512,000 for the same quarter of fiscal 2008.
Gross margin decreased 11% to $8.1 million from $9.1 million in the comparable period a year earlier.
Peter Baker, CEO of Vermont Pure Holdings, said: "Economic conditions in our marketplace have presented us with a challenging business environment in 2009.
