Oil May Look Placid On The Surface – But It’s Roiling Underneath

Keeping up with crude oil is a bit of a migraine these days.
It's an essential task, of course. Gasoline, diesel and kerosene play a double-faced role in our modern world. When we are ahead of the curve, they grease the wheels of the grand machine, allowing people and goods to freely seek their best markets.[More...]

Two Big Reasons To Dump Your Oil Refinery

Quite simply, this is not a good time to be in the business of refining oil in the United States. The obvious reason for this is the continuing recession which has led to lower demand for gasoline and other refined products. With the summer driving season past the halfway point, having the word ’staycation’ become commonplace is not good news for the refiners. But that’s not all. And it goes well beyond simple economic downturn. There are other factors at[More...]

Weekly Market Outlook: Looking For More Weakness

Sulaman Chaudhry and Andy Cole send: Just a few charts for today: The S&P continues to be in a downtrend from last week. As we’ve stated in earlier posts, the fundamentals have not improved enough to sustain this rally. The jobs data last week came in worse than expected, and we feel that this is a number that can only rise in the near-term, primarily because Chrysler just closed 789 dealerships and General Motors (GM) is in the process of closing down another 1,100 dealerships. This will no doubt influence the jobs data signifigantly in the coming months and while we could have another upleg before[More...]

As we exit the worst January ever, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the best performers of the past month. Before we do, courtesy of Dshort.com this is a chart that has been passed around a lot in the investing community so I thought I'd share it. Two ways to read this - of the 4 great bear markets the past 100 years, 3 "ended" roughly where we are now... about a 50% loss in value from peak. That's the bullish view i.e. "can't get worse than this" and if we fall to S&P 750 (November lows) but never break through they will be correct. The bearish view is - the 4th bear market ended in a 90% drop, and if you plot the velocity of the decline, what happened to us in Sep - Nov caused us to be in lockstep with the worst of the 4. I'm not calling for a 90% drop[More...]

Two Custom Screens Yield Picks From The Oil Patch

This post looks at the results of combining several of the stock screens that we ran this weekend at TradeRadar. We executed the usual weekend Alert HQ process (read about this weeks results) and generated several lists of stocks based on our special screens including: Bollinger Band Breakouts, Trend Leaders and Cash Flow Kings (you can download these lists at the Trend Leaders page). Trend Leaders represents a collection of stocks in strong up-trends. These stocks are registering strong signals using Aroon analysis, DMI and MACD. They are also above their 50-day exponential moving average. To obtain the list of Cash Flow Kings we calculate the free cash flow yield of all the stocks we scan and pick the ones whose yield is 50% or greater.<br[More...]
