But bad news for the American press. Ezra Klein and Stan Collender pile on to David Broder. Each day the Washington Post publishes David Broder is another day of humiliation for serious journalists working for the Post, for Newsweek, etc.--and also a day of humiliation for all those working for Stanley Kaplan Test Prep.

What Is David Broder Thinking?: David Broder has a column in today's The Washington Post that I find close to incomprehensible.

Generating A Robust Recovery

Officially, the Great Recession may be coming to an end, but it will leave in its wake historically high unemployment and a host of other serious economic problems. How will policy-makers promote a robust, employment-led recovery that will lay the foundation for strong, long-term growth? Meeting this challenge requires both the will to continue investing in families hard hit by the recession despite growing budget deficits and the skill in crafting the right mix of policies to ensure that this recovery - unlike the last one - will bring significant numbers of new jobs and rising[More...]

WSJ: Banks Profit From US Guarantee

Thank you Wall Street Journal for actually putting a number to this FDIC guarantee. I have mentioned many times that our financial oligarchs (which apparently now include General Electric (GE)) are benefiting in a massive way from the FDIC backstopping their debt. I just never had a number. I have been chuckling to myself after troubled bank after troubled bank - including our lovely Citigroup (C) extols they are able to raise money. First with the FDIC guarantee, and then lately without. Look oligarchs - I could take someone with FICO 300 (does it go that low?) and she can raise money as long as the[More...]

Profitable Gannett Still Priced For Bankruptcy

(GCI) was expected to post earnings per share of $.36, but the actual results came in 10 cents ahead of those projections. Gannett has not beaten estimates by this wide margin in quite some time. Revenue was slightly lower than expected; sales slumped to $1.41 billion or a decline of 18% from a year ago. In addition, the company also revised an earlier write-down upward, and this combined with the earnings beat propelled the stock higher by nearly 30%. Make no mistake, the problems in the newspaper industry are real and quite serious.[More...]

There is somewhat of a lack of newsflow this morning, and it is likely to stay that way until earnings season kicks off later this week when Alcoa (AA) reports. Healthcare is the only sector positive today. The Washington Post reports that hospitals have agreed to contribute $155 billion over 10 years towards covering the cost of healthcare for those who are uninsured. Energy stocks are the weakest on another drop in oil prices, now down below the $63 level.
FDIC Troubled Bank List Now 305

Every quarter when I post this I get the question of "where are the names of the troubled banks" so let me preface this post by saying - the names are not disclosed. That is on purpose. The FDIC does not want you to run to banks on their list and withdraw money because that is how a troubled bank seals its fate. Second, let us be clear - without the US taxpayer supporting their operations Bank of America (BAC) and Citigroup (C) would of been farther along than "troubled". The fact that these 2 NEVER made the list despite hundreds of billions of government support among the two tells you all you need to know about this list. Last year (Aug 26, 2008: FDIC Troubled Bank List) I was making the[More...]

Business school has definitely met my expectations so far.

When I started at New York University's Stern School of Business, I had two goals: first, to develop the "hard" business skills that my liberal arts education and communications-based career emphasized less than others; and second, to switch careers from foreign affairs in the federal government to marketing in the private sector.

Specifically, I'll be responsible for launching a new product at the paper, which will allow me to see whether this less traditional marketing role is a better fit for me or if I should focus on moving into consumer packaged-goods brand management after business school.
