Wynn Resorts (WYNN) Pummeled On Weak Earnings

Today's reaction by Wynn Resorts (WYNN) is exactly the type of thing that causes those of us who still deal in the dark magic of "fundamentals" to go batty. I had been shorting Wynn (which let me reiterate is a very well run company) as it seemed to levitate day after day on "hope" and "green shoots". Or our favorite "the US consumer is back - even if she does not have job." Valuation was obnoxious - but still it went up. Despite being tied very directly to a still very damaged US consumer. But you can't talk sense to a room of stampeding bulls... or their computers. So we averaged "up", and eventually when the stock came back to Earth a bit took a loss on our short.[More...]

VIX - CBOE Volatility index – Monday’s leap in the reading of Wall Street’s fear gauge was accompanied by one of those occasions when investors were left flat-footed during the trading day as stocks flashed from green to red. It was highly reminiscent of the trading pattern in 2008 and earlier this year when, try as they might, investors couldn’t shake off the recession blues no matter how economists tried to spin data points.[More...]

Strange days continue in this market... yesterday was a great example. Futures flat - and then an explosion of buying on no news within the first hour of the market being open. Why? Great question. You don't usually see the market move like that in advance of a Fed meeting. There was no news... but just a rally out of the blue. We are working on day 23 of 24 without a pullback of greater than 0.5% in the S&P 500... the rally itself here is not remarkable in of itself but the nature of it - without any serious pullback for even a session is. I am looking at a lot of individual charts and continue to be stared back with stocks on parabolic runs or stocks slowly breaking down, breaking support. But the general market is holding up - my watch list is not full of the type of merchandise that has been in favor the past two weeks so that could explain the divergence in what I am seeing versus the market doing fine. I am actually working hard to find new[More...]
