Dave Fry's Market Comments For June 30

MARKET COMMENT June 30, 2009 Um, “worse than expected”? I guess that sums it up today as Consumer Confidence data was terrible. Stock price declines today were milder than expected given the news. But, silly me, I forget that this is the quarter and mid-year end—there are bonuses to be had and bullish headlines to be written.[More...]

MARKET COMMENT June 15, 2009 The only positive from today is Monday’s have proven to be good buying days of late. But that’s the only thing. Clearly some complacency (“the bottom’s in” and etc) combined with light volume (SPY traded only 180 million shares Friday) allowed markets to be pushed higher by those who could do it. Getting sucked in with them has always been the danger as the game often is to dump their accumulated stock to you once you step in.[More...]

Dave Fry's Comments for May 20

MARKET COMMENT May 20, 2009 Wall Street has deals to get done and they were excited about BAC’s secondary this morning. The way these things work is simple: if you’re an institution, you better play ball and buy or you’re cut out of future deals you might really like. So we opened higher amid this enthusiasm and the bad news from HPQ last night was brushed-off. That’s the way it’s been with news—front burner it, back burner it and repeat.[More...]

Revisiting Some Previous Picks

The volatility in the markets over the past year has been staggering to say the least. Even during these turbulent times, I was always of the belief that utilities were relatively safe. As a result, I wrote about a few stocks in the past seven months or so that I thought were pretty good plays in the current market situation. For the most part, I was drawn to these stocks because of their potential for growth moving forward, their steady history, and their extremely strong dividends. Although “sure things” do not exist, I was fairly confident in the ability for these stocks to perform well. It has become quite evident that even with strong fundamentals such as those that these stocks possessed there is no guarantee that a stock is going to perform well. I thought that the safe play would be a large cap that boasted a high dividend. This is initially what attracted me to Southern Company (<a[More...]
