IU seemed most interested in the increasing presence of Chinese stocks. The five largest stocks in the Russell Global Index (I'm not familiar with this one) in order are; Petrochina (PTR) ExxonMobil (XOM) Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (IDCBY) China Mobile (CHL) a client holding Walmart (WMT) We are all much more aware of China as an investment destination than we were seven years ago. I seem to remember that the first Chinese stock on the NYSE was Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical (SHI), but I may have that wrong, and then it seemed like most people knew[More...]

Alternative Energy Investments: Three Scenarios For Clean Energy by Jim Stanton, Contributing Editor, Sector Watch When oil prices moved to over $30 a barrel in the mid 1980s, it was considered a significant event.
Iraqi oil licensing round runs into trouble

BAGHDAD - Iraq's hopes for an oil-revenue fueled postwar recovery suffered a sharp blow Tuesday as the foreign oil companies it counted on to help develop its vast reserves greeted the country's first oil auction in over 30 years with grumbles and just one deal.

Roughly a year in the making, the foreign licensing round was touted by Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani as a key step to boosting Iraq's oil output to 4 million barrels per day and raking in cash the government desperately needs after years of sanctions and the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 left its economy in shambles.

Two oil executives from different companies at the auction complained that Iraq was offering too little money given the prevailing security risks and political uncertainty.

BAGHDAD - The first bidding in more than 30 years for development rights to some of Iraq's oil fields stumbled Tuesday, with only one field being awarded as major foreign firms demanded better terms from a government in dire need of crude revenues.

The main stumbling block was price, with the companies asking for more money than Iraq was willing to pay for the crude they produced.

"It puts Iraq back on square one."
