Dec. 2--The road from Las Vegas to Death Valley runs past the town of Pahrump, Nev., known for three things.
Pahrump's third claim to fame is the on-again off-again multibillion-dollar project to bury radioactive waste under nearby Yucca Mountain, which, naturally, brings us to one of the heroes of Three Mile Island, who lives in Allentown.
I'll get back to Gischel, who is one element in a mystic convergence of events involving Yucca Mountain and an amazing article in Newsweek magazine, but first a personal recollection.

When Ecomotion opened in Portland at NE 16th and Sandy Boulevard in September 2007, it was a bauble on the automotive dealership scene, all cool green and dear glass.
But if you assumed electric cars in Oregon are dead in the water, a green pipe dream, you'd be wrong.
Highway-ready, family-friendly electric vehicles from major manufacturers like Nissan and Mitsubishi are on their way to Oregon dealerships as early as 2010.

The exponential growth of the online marketplace and the enhanced capability of online companies to collect, store, transfer, and analyze consumer data have raised concerns about online privacy (FTC 2000).
Yet some evidence indicates that large numbers of consumers deliberately falsify information in Web site exchanges (Fox 2005).
Thus, it becomes vitally important to understand how consumers perceive and respond to such requests, particularly how they counterbalance the firms' desire for information with their own desire for privacy in the relationship (Carroll 2002; Charters 2002).

At Least One Maine Man Will Register His Autocycle ; While Demand Has Stalled, the Three-Wheeled Electric Vehicles Will Be Street Legal Starting Sept. 12.

Starting next month, Maine motorists will be able to drive legally in a new type of three-wheeled motor vehicle.
But there probably won't be a rush to register autocycles with the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which has yet to receive any inquiries about them, said Garry Hinkley, vehicle services director.
This year, the Legislature approved autocycles for use on roads with speed limits of 45 mph or less, starting Sept. 12.

Funds for Water Project Move Through the Pipeline

Jul. 31--A bill to designate $9 million for the Southwest Water Authority is making its way through the Senate, and Thursday cleared another hurdle as subcommittee members approved it.
A part of the Energy and Water Appropriations bill, the money is slated for SWA pipeline expansion into Oliver, Mercer and northern Dunn counties as well as to help ccomplete the main transmission lines to serve Hazen, Stanton and Zap, according to a press release from Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D.
Mary Massad, SWA manager and chief executive officer, said it's likely those who will hook onto the waterline have used well water in the past.

Portland Leaders Vow to Fight Water Treatment

Jul. 29--The Portland City Council today drew battle lines in the fight over treating its drinking water.
Council members restated their vehement opposition to the federal requirement that the city must build a plant to treat Bull Run water and agreed to continue to fight for a variance from the rules.
At the same time as a contingency, they directed the Portland Water Bureau to begin planning and design work on a $100 million plant that will zap the water with ultraviolet light, which kills the microorganism cryptosporidium.

Fishing for a Solution for Texas' Trinity River, Poisoned With PCBs

DALLAS _ Because it is abandoned _ because you can stand on the levee at Westmoreland Avenue or Hampton Boulevard for an hour and see no one teaching a child to fish, no one floating on an inner tube on a summer afternoon, no one just sitting and thinking _ people do not think much about what reaches the river with each rain.
In time, the biggest fish in the river held so much poison that it became dangerous for people to eat them.
The poison has lingered across generations of fish and people and has become a part of the river's routine, the way an old tire snagged on a submerged tree eventually forms a hump of mud and new grass.
