Stocks Rise On Mixed Jobs Picture

Thin-volume pre-holiday trade and jobs data that suggested the pace of job destruction is slowing combined to drive U.S. stocks higher in today's regular session. Photonics (NASDAQ:PLAB) : Upgraded To 'Buy' At Merrill Lynch

Merrill Lynch is out upgrading Photronics (NASDAQ:PLAB) to Buy from Neutral while raising their target to $4 from $2. (The upgrade comes after the co reported its F2Q09 results two days ago) Merrill notes that although interest expense is increasing in the near term, revenue growth is starting to pick up again and expense cuts already in place increase cash available to service debt. In addition, the total debt level in F3Q drops $30mn when the new lease on the Nanofab takes affect. As PLAB’s financial flexibility increases, valuation multiples should climb toward ongoing concern peer levels. Half the peer P/TBV average would be 0.7x. Bailed-Out Banks To Buy Toxic Assets

Stocks are fluctuating in Friday trading after investors looked past new unemployment data that showed unemployment jumped in March to its highest rate since 1983. At 2:37 pm ET, the Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) is up 0.92% at 454.33, while the Dow is up 0.41% at 8,010.98 and the S&P 500 is up 0.79% at 841. This morning oil prices rose above $53 a barrel, extending a rally fueled by market optimism that crude demand may rebound if the U.S. economic downturn bottoms out soon, while it was reported that U.S. banks that have received government aid are considering buying toxic assets to be sold by rivals under the Treasury's $1,000 billion plan to revive the financial system. Since I missed Zale's (ZLC) journey to sub $1-ish (Jan 23: Where You Won't Shop in 2009), I am pondering Signet Jewelers (SIG) as a proxy. Very weird action today - it is up 14% based on a cost cutting report that happened yesterday - but the report happened in the morning. So the stock did not react yesterday but reacted today. Today will be an interesting follow-up case study in how central banks impact markets.Late in yesterday’s session in the US equity markets, there was enhanced discussion of the prospects for a major Fed rate cut, which propelled share prices up +230 points in the Dow 30 Average.This morning the Bank of England and European Central Bank will announce their policy decisions. Zale Delays Earnings Release to Account for Adjustments

Sep. 2--Irving-based Zale Corp. said Wednesday that it will report earnings a week later than planned in order to account for $13 million in non-cash adjustments identified.
The jewelry retailer's fiscal fourth quarter and year-end results will be released on Sept. 9.
Zale said that during its year-end review, $13 million in non-cash, pre-tax adjustments were identified that affected prior year results, of which about $6.3 million dated back to the 1990s.
