Stock market volatility is back, a signal to some experts that the powerful rally that started in early March may be coming to an end.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose or fell more than 100 points in seven of the past 12 trading days, capped by a 205-point advance on Thursday that left the index almost 53 percent higher than its closing level on March 9.
The Dow's muted 17-point gain on Friday masked the fact that it swung nearly 108 points throughout the day after the government reported the unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent in October.

Nov. 8--Three scientists say federal nuclear regulators owe Utahns an apology -- and a policy change -- for allowing shallow burial of depleted uranium, including the 49,000 tons already at EnergySolutions Inc.'s landfill in Tooele County.
The uranium enrichment waste gets increasingly hazardous for a million years, and that's too long to reasonably ensure the safety of any shallow landfills, especially one like the Tooele County site that is underwater a few hundred of every several thousand years.
Those wet cycles could spread long-lived radioactive material throughout the Great Salt Lake basin, the scientists say.

To celebrate the 41st anniversary of its downtown Chattanooga headquarters, SunTrust Bank recently recently completed renovations to its lobby, giving it a more modern feel, Mrs. Culpepper said.

Nov. 8--TUPELO -- Northeast Mississippi's 10 electric power associations hold $17.4 million in investments and $14.8 million in cash, their latest financial reports show.
"That could put our customers in a problem, if we didn't keep reserves."
Questions about EPA investments came up recently with the revelation that McComb-based Magnolia Electric Power Association sank some $5.3 million during 2008 into Stanford Financial Group, which collapsed earlier this year under the weight of a U.S. Securities amp& Exchange Commission investigation.

Police seek help in fire that destroyed borough tavern

Nov. 8--NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Schuylkill County Crimestoppers and state police at Frackville are asking for the public's help in finding those responsible for starting a fire that destroyed a borough tavern on Oct. 17.
Flames gutted Moe's Pub at 57 Water St. and also damaged two adjoining row homes at 53 and 55 Water St., state police at Frackville said.
Fire officials said the massive blaze was lit only about 20 minutes after the last patrons left Moe's for the night.

Nov. 8--LODI -- If there is one thing many Lodians wear on their sleeves, it is the age-old anxiety over Stockton's slow urbanization north.
The California Department of Transportation is planning an Interstate 5 expansion project that includes a proposed freeway interchange just south of Lodi's sewer plant, a project that Lodi officials worry will push Stockton sprawl north of Eight Mile Road and cause headaches at City Hall.
And late last month, Stockton crews broke ground on a massive water-treatment plant on the west side of Lower Sacramento Road, where a 56-acre facility will have the capacity to treat 30 million gallons of Delta water a day, also north of Eight Mile Road.

The Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) began the week on a high, rising by 0.74% to 2,941.72.
Twenty-one stocks rose, while seven fell and seven held steady.

"The tenants are the innocent victims in the foreclosure crisis," said Amy Marx, a New Haven Legal Assistance Association housing lawyer who contacted the three families at 9 Abner St. after she found the property listed in foreclosure filings in New Haven housing court.

Nov. 8--For months, investors in a soured currency investment program that was promoted by some Twin Cities financial advisers have been left to wonder what became of their money that seemingly vanished overnight.
Bo Beckman, one of the Minneapolis financial advisers who promoted the currency investment, and one of his attorneys traveled to Panama last month in a frantic and successful effort to track down the fate of at least part of the missing money.
Beckman said he traveled to Panama after obtaining information from a variety of sources, including investigative reports in the Star Tribune, indicating that at least $12 million of the investors' money had been routed through a California attorney's office and on to Panama to pay for the land.

Nov. 8--Unemployment figures continue to climb in Kerr County, but locals can at least take solace that it is not as bad as other parts of the country, according to local economic officials.
The Labor Department announced Friday that the unemployment rate rose from 9.8 to 10.2 percent in October, with 190,000 net jobs lost since September.
The Kerr County rate has risen steadily from 4.6 percent in April.

Work on reservoir begins

Nov. 8--AMANDA TOWNSHIP -- It could be spring before the public sees anything resembling a reservoir, but work at the massive site has begun in earnest.
Crews are installing drainage tile at the reservoir at Agerter and Grubb roads, and also installing a pump station at Agerter Road and the Auglaize River, Assistant Utilities Director Mike Caprella said.
The city began preliminary engineering on the project at Agerter and Grubb roads in 2001, but planned for the reservoir west of Bresler Reservoir for decades.

Nov. 8--NORTHERN CAMBRIA -- State police say the allegations facing former Northern Cambria official David Suchar include selling a few of the borough's manhole covers and fire hydrants to a private community and pocketing the proceeds.
Police said Miller said he purchased several items from Suchar in 2007 and 2008.
The affidavit shows that Miller told police that he paid for the items by check, and said Suchar told him to make it payable to Suchar himself and Suchar would deposit the money in the employee retirement fund.

CHARLESTON Large wind turbines would be clearly visible two miles off the Carolina coast but would all but disappear into the haze eight miles out to sea, a new photo simulation shows.
Clemson's South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies created the simulation as part of Santee Cooper's research into the viability of building a wind farm off the Grand Strand.
"We think it's important to give people an idea of what it looks like," said Marc Tye, Santee Cooper's vice president of conservation and renewable energy.

Nov. 8--EL PASO -- The recession has forced organizers of the biggest maquiladora trade show in Juarez to dump most of the event's usual activities.
Instead, the annual event has been reduced to 17 invited ma quila operators meeting with about 75 invited suppliers from Mexico and the United States in one-on-one business sessions, reported Felipe Galan Uribe, director of Juarez Economic Development, a private economic development agency which organizes the show.
This is the first time in Expo Maquila's 22-year history that the full trade show won't be held, Galan said.

OPINION: Where leaves fall and words fail

Nov. 8--There's a creek in Haymount that winds through a park, dripping down from storm drain to storm drain, in a green gully between Rush Road and Parkview Avenue.
The trees are big and old, their roots sticking up and stretching out like ribs along the creek bank.
A yellow sign warns drivers: "Children At Play."

Roseway Drive to get upgrade

Nov. 8--EL PASO -- A much-traveled, but very narrow street in the Lower Valley will get a $3.3-million upgrade that will allow traffic in the area to flow more smoothly.
The city will widen Roseway Drive between Zaragoza Road and Presa Place from the current 15 feet to 36 feet.
"The construction will bring the street up to standards and help make commutes in the area better."
