First 2-Month Restaurant Index Gain (%) in 3 Years

The outlook for the restaurant industry improved somewhat in October, as the National Restaurant Association's comprehensive index of restaurant activity registered its first gain in three months. The Association's Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry stood at 98.0 in October, up 0.5% from its September level (see top chart above). However, the RPI still remained below 100 for the 24th consecutive month, which signifies contraction in the index of key industry indicators. Although restaurant operators continue to report soft samestore sales and customer traffic levels, they are somewhat more optimistic about improving conditions in the months ahead.[More...]

U.S. consumers love spending money – or at least they used to. Saving money? Not so much. Think back to the three most recent economic growth periods: The Reagan Boom of the mid-1980s, the Clinton Boom of the mid-1990s and the last easy money, easy credit boom from 2003-2007. All three shared one thing in common: consumers spent more money than they had.[More...]

In an economy where 70% of GDP is a result of consumer spending do you not think the people that name these things could have come up with a little better moniker? Why black? Black because this is the part of the year where retailers finally begin to turn a profit or “move into the black”? Black because the workers in the stores that open ridiculously early and close ridiculously late are in very dark moods by the time the whole thing is over?[More...]

Stock futures remain sharply lower, though have improved slightly from even deeper early declines. Because of the holiday, U.S. stocks are the late responder to news that shook finacial markets Thursday. Global investor sentiment was slammed by news that Dubai World, a government investment company, has asked creditors if it can postpone payments until May. European averages fell early Friday but two days of sharp losses eventually lured buyers and the averages are modestly firmer of late.[More...]

On Thanksgiving when Americans celebrate their first bailout, the big story is that the planned “orderly” decline in the Greenback is starting to be anything but! With most US investors probably thinking more about holiday than markets, it should be no surprise that markets have traded quietly for the most part overnight. The main action has been in currency markets, where the Dollar has been sold across the board after breaking through 1.50 against the Euro and slumping to a 14 year low versus the Yen.[More...]

Apple (AAPL) continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. It's hard not to buy this stock every time it dips. The trend-line, using the 50 day moving average, has not been violated since March, which provides us with an excellent approach in establishing a stop-loss, which I have done, in that I will exit this trade if the 50-day MA is breached.[More...]

As a reminder, while our our investment strategy focuses on bottom-up analysis of individual companies, we think awareness of overall macroeconomic conditions is helpful since trends that may impact certain companies or sectors. As always, divergent views exist on where the Market and economy are headed. For example, we published our recent "Time to Go to Cash"....
