RIMM to Acquire Chalk Media Corp.

Research In Motion Limited  and Chalk Media Corp. today announced that the two companies have entered into an arrangement agreement (the “Arrangement Agreement”) for RIM to acquire Chalk, a publicly-held company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, in an all-cash transaction at a price per share of CDN $0.142, or CDN $23,125,000.Concurrently with the execution of the Arrangement Agreement, RIM has made a loan to Chalk in the amount of CDN $2.2 million, which will provide additional working capital to fund Chalk’s operations until the completion of the transaction.

RIMM to Offer CAD $1.50 Per Share in Cash for Certicom
  

Research In Motion Limited announced today its intention to make an offer (the “Offer”) to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares (the “Certicom Shares”) of Certicom Corp. (“Certicom”) at a price of CAD $1.50 cash per Certicom Share.The Offer price represents a premium of approximately 76.5% over the closing price of Certicom Shares on December 2, 2008 and a premium of approximately 76.1% over the volume weighted average trading price of Certicom Shares for the previous 20 trading days.  The total acquisition cost is expected to be approximately CAD $66 million.

MySpace and RIM Usher in New Era of Mobile Social Networking

MySpace, the world’s premier social network, and Research In Motion , a global leader in wireless innovation, today announced they are joining forces to develop an integrated MySpace Mobile experience customized for BlackBerry® smartphones. The new MySpace for BlackBerry® smartphones application is fully optimized to deliver rich content and data to users on the go. MySpace for BlackBerry smartphones integrates MySpace’s main social networking components with the BlackBerry platform to provide instant, push-based messaging to BlackBerry and MySpace users. The application will be available in all BlackBerry® markets globally. RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie will highlight the MySpace and RIM relationship during his keynote speech at CTIA today.

As part of this collaboration, RIM is also creating a BlackBerry® community page on MySpace for users to access the latest BlackBerry smartphone news, content, videos, games, ringtones, skins and other unique and engaging features.

Research In Motion Reports First Quarter Results  
 

Research In Motion Limited , a world leader in the mobile communications market, today reported first quarter results for the three months ended May 31, 2008 (all figures in U.S. dollars and U.S. GAAP).

Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 was $2.24 billion, up 19% from $1.88 billion in the previous quarter and up 107% from $1.08 billion in the same quarter of last year. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 82% for devices, 13% for service, 3% for software and 2% for other revenue.   During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 5.4 million devices.

Approximately 2.3 million net new BlackBerry® subscriber accounts were added in the quarter.  At the end of the quarter, the total BlackBerry subscriber account base was over 16 million.

RIM, RBC and Thomson Reuters to Anchor a $150 Million BlackBerry Partners Fund Focused on Investing in Mobile Applications and Services

Research In Motion, RBC and Thomson Reuters, today announced plans to launch the BlackBerry® Partners Fund, a US$150 million venture capital fund, to invest in mobile applications and services for the BlackBerry® platform and other mobile platforms. The Fund is to be co-managed by JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners.


Agnostic to both stage and balance sheet, the BlackBerry Partners Fund will not restrict the development of mobile applications and services to any single mobile platform or any specific industry segment. The Fund will be designed to advance the industry by fostering development and driving the entrepreneurial spirit to create the most innovative mobile offerings for customers.

Brightpoint and RIM Enter into a Global Master Distribution Agreement

Brightpoint, Inc. and Research In Motion Limited  today announced that they have entered into a global master distribution agreement.  Under the terms of the agreement Brightpoint may distribute RIM products to various territories globally that may include North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East & Africa, and Asia Pacific.  Pursuant to the agreement, Brightpoint will support a wide range of RIM's BlackBerry® smartphones and help in the global expansion and penetration of BlackBerry products and services via Brightpoint’s expansive customer base of more than 25,000 B2B channels globally.

Research In Motion Reports Fourth Quarter and Year-End Results for Fiscal 2008

Research In Motion Limited , a world leader in the mobile communications market, today reported results for the three months and fiscal year ended March 1, 2008 (all figures in U.S. dollars and U.S. GAAP). 

Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008 was $1.88 billion, up 102% from $930.4 million in the same quarter of last year. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 81% for handhelds, 14% for service, 3% for software and 2% for other revenue. Revenue for the fiscal year ended March 1, 2008 was $6.01 billion, up 98% from $3.04 billion last year.  RIM shipped 4.4 million smartphones in the fourth quarter and approximately 14 million smartphones during fiscal 2008.

Approximately 2.18 million net new BlackBerry® subscriber accounts were added in the quarter.   At the end of the quarter, the total BlackBerry subscriber account base was over 14 million.

Research In Motion Provides Updated Subscriber Forecast

Research In Motion Limited today provided an update on forecasted net subscriber account additions for the fiscal fourth quarter ending March 1, 2008.

RIMM now expects net subscriber account additions for Q4 to be approximately 15-20% higher than the 1.82 million net subscriber account additions forecasted by RIM on December 20, 2007.   The total BlackBerry® subscriber account base is expected to be approximately 14 million at the end of the quarter.

SFR and RIM Launch the BlackBerry Storm Smartphone in France

SFR and Research In Motion today announced the availability of the BlackBerry® Storm™ smartphone in France. NII Holdings and Research In Motion to Launch New BlackBerry Smartphone with Industry-Leading Push-to-Talk Service in Latin America
