Nokia and Research In Motion renew patent license agreement
Nokia announced today that Research In Motion (RIM) has renewed a multi-year patent license agreement. The agreement covers the worldwide use of standards essential patents for GSM, WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies. The financial terms of the agreement consist of an up-front payment and on-going royalties payable to Nokia.

Nokia acquires Symbian Limited
Nokia today announced that it has completed its offer to acquire Symbian Limited. All conditions to Nokia's offer to acquire Symbian Limited have been satisfied and it has received valid acceptance of greater than 99.9% of the total Symbian shares that Nokia did not already own. Symbian is the software company that develops and licenses Symbian OS, the market-leading open operating system for mobile devices.
The closing of the offer is a fundamental step in the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, announced on June 24, 2008 by Nokia, together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, ST-NXP Wireless, Texas Instruments and Vodafone.

Nokia Research Center Hollywood will work with members of the media & entertainment industry including new technology companies and creative talent, together with leading universities in the region to drive long-term research activities to further strengthen Nokia's leadership position in the convergence of internet and mobility.The new NRC Hollywood laboratory will research on many technologies surrounding the media industry: film, music, games, web and TV. With a strong emphasis on entertainment and associated experiences, research topics will include mixed reality, content creation and user interface experiences, among others.

Nokia completes OZ Communications acquisition
Nokia announced today that it has completed its acquisition of OZ Communications Inc, a privately held company with approximately 220 employees and headquartered in Montreal, Canada. The deal was initially announced on September 30, 2008. By acquiring OZ, Nokia will address the fast growing consumer messaging market by providing an affordable mass market email and instant message platform for Nokia Series 40 devices, complementing the existing portfolio of mobile messaging solutions for Nokia S60 devices. Nokia completes Trolltech acquisition
On June 5th, 2008 European Commission announced that it had unconditionally approved Nokia's voluntary tender offer for all the shares in Trolltech ASA (OSE: Troll). Nokia today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Trolltech, a recognized software provider with world-class software development platforms and frameworks. In addition to the key software assets, the Trolltech team will play an important role in accelerating the implementation of Nokia's software strategy. This will enable Nokia to accelerate the cross-platform software strategy for mobile devices and desktop applications, and develop our Internet services business.

Orange and Nokia to form strategic international partnership on mobile services
Co-operation in the areas of music, mobile gaming, maps, advertising and location based services
Orange and Nokia today announced a strategic international partnership, extending the first agreement signed by the two companies in February 2008. The two industry leaders have committed to a three year partnership, which will include the addition of ten new Nokia handsets to the Orange Signature range and the addition of music to a combined offer of games, advertising, maps and location based services. Orange and Nokia have agreed to launch a suite of integrated multimedia services on the new Nokia handsets, launching in H208 across nine major markets, in an initiative designed to boost the adoption of mobile digital entertainment. As part of the strategic partnership, customers will have direct access to the Orange Music Store, both Orange and NGage games, as well as Nokia Maps. Under the Orange Signature programme, all services will be integrated into the familiar Orange user interface, providing one click access to information and entertainment.

Announcement paves the way for Nokia to cooperate with the new Innovation University
Nokia today announced the expansion of its research activities with the opening of a research lablet on the Otaniemi campus of Helsinki University of Technology. At the same time Nokia Research Center and Helsinki University of Technology announced a joint strategic research program in the area of mobile communications technologies.
Nokia Research Lablet Otaniemi will work in an open mode with various laboratories of Helsinki University of Technology. This means establishing joint research programs and daily interaction between Nokia and university researchers who will share the same facilities. Nokia is looking forward to future collaboration with the new Innovation University - consisting of Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), University of Art and Design Helsinki (TAIK) and Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) - after their merger in August 2009. Nokia hopes the Innovation University will be a leading innovation hot spot in mobile technologies and systems.
The joint research agenda will include: new communication technologies; innovative uses for radio and Internet connections; user interaction and applications of nanotechnology. This may lead to

Nokia has released the latest version of its award-winning mobile mapping and navigation service, Nokia Maps, as well as its personalized online mapping experience on Ovi by Nokia. This combination of Nokia Maps plus Ovi is the first free service that allows people to pre-plan their journey at home on their PC and synchronize with their mobile, giving access to pre-planned routes and favorite destinations while on the move. In addition, Nokia Maps has been updated to include a number of new features such as high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for 216 cities and terrain maps, as well as a new route overview during routing and during Drive, the purchasable turn-by-turn car navigation guidance.

Nokia's Home Control Center will be the basis for next generation security, smart home solutions and household energy management systems. The platform is open allowing third parties to integrate their own smart home solutions and services; its core consumer value is the plug and play experience across all solution areas with high security levels built in. All solutions based on the platform can be used through a smart phone or PC locally or remotely. Consumers can monitor and control their electricity usage, switch devices on and off, and monitor different objects, such as temperature, camera, and motion. Estimated retail prices of the new devices range from 25 to 90 EUR, with several models expected to begin shipping in 2008. Partnership extension capitalizes on latest advances in mobile and payment technologies
Visa Inc. the world's largest retail electronic payments network, and Nokia the world's largest mobile device manufacturer, announced plans today to deliver Visa payment and payment-related services - including contactless payments, remote payments, money transfer, alerts and notifications - for Nokia's next generation handsets beginning with the Nokia 6212 classic, expected to be available starting October 2008.
The Visa applications will first be made available for trial use by interested financial institutions and will allow consumers with the Nokia 6212 classic and a relationship with a participating Visa issuing bank to use their Visa account to pay for goods and services; initiate mobile money transfers to other individuals with Visa accounts; receive near real-time notifications of activity on their Visa account; and "opt in" to receive offers and discounts from merchants.

Nokia and University of Cambridge launch the Morph - a nanotechnology concept device
Morph, a joint nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) - was launched today alongside the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA's official website. Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. Nokia Maps is taking its mapping and navigation experiences to the next level by enhancing its pedestrian navigation, adding multimedia city guides, offering satellite images, and sporting a redesigned user interface.
Nokia Maps 2.0 adds Walk, a pedestrian focused navigation component to the application, while still offering Drive, a world class car navigation system. The pedestrian navigation efficiently walks you from A to B with visual turn-by-turn guidance. It helps you to locate yourself by giving information about the surrounding buildings, streets and parks (including pathways through the park) and in newer handsets, like the Nokia 6210 Navigator, points the direction in which you are walking; using the handset's built in compass for orientation.
